in january 2024 i attempted my first betta spawn between a platinum female and a nemo koi male. the spawning process was really good and for the most part very peaceful. as the eggs were laid i took the female out and let the male do his thing. as it turned out the male was an overachiever and covered almost the whole top with bubbles. he was working non stop to but the fallen babies back into the nest, that he build so precisely. after day 3 the babies became free swimming and i took the clearly tired male out and gave him his well earned peace and quiet. from there on it was my job to care for these microscopic babies. i fed them micro worms and later on freshly hatched live baby brine shrimp. next to feeding and regular water changes it was just fascinating to watch these little eyelashes grow up.
as it turned out, watching end on end of videos on how to raise little baby bettas, i turned out with about 150 babies at the 3 month mark. i sold a bunch of them to people in my fish club at a young age, for them to let them grow out. i was just too overrun with these beautiful little feisty babies, especially as the time came to separate the males from my spawn group. i ended up with 53 males. yup 53!!
so i had to get creative on how to house them.
a lot of aquariums and water changes later... i now have beautiful babies for sale for you guys.
